Before I share my experience in this course, I would like to highlight two important things for safety purposes.

1. I am not a professional reviewer or something, so if there’s any mistake in this blog, please forgive me and guide me through my mistakes. Just sharing my experience and thoughts on this course. Thank You.

2. I did not receive anything from TCM Security or anyone related to the company to write this blog. I purchased the course myself, studied myself, and just shared my personal experience.

Greetings, Everyone! 🌟

I have been studying Linux for about a year. I started with Kali, as my dream is to become a Penetration Tester (Pentester) after my graduation. I used a YouTube video on the FreeCodeCamp channel. Although it was easy to use Kali, I found it a little difficult for me to use Ubuntu for my University courses. So, I searched for many courses (mostly free) to learn about the basics of Linux before starting to use Kali completely. At that time, I found out TCM Security, a great cybersecurity company, provides a basic-level Linux course for $30. Although the course is quite affordable, I could not afford it as in Malaysia, this course is about RM140 (including the taxes to buy this course — as of today). I was saving money from my pocket money to buy this course, and coincidentally something great happened.

TCM Security made a promotion last year. They were giving some courses for $1, $5, and $6 last year. This course I was planning to buy for $30, was offered for $1 — JACKPOT. I bought all the discounted courses that were available at that time, and LINUX 101 by Brent Eskridge was one of them. I finished 80% of the course during my internship at that time. However, in the final few weeks, I had to complete many reports and a project for the internship. So, I paused the lessons and focused on that. My next semester started, and I had no time (I think, to be honest, I was wasting time) to study this course, as I was handling 4 projects from 7 subjects at a time in that semester — OVERWHELMING, but manageable.

Once the semester was done, I took a rest for a couple of days and resumed my lessons from the beginning. Started it on the 24th of February and finished the course on the 6th of March this year (today). Now the backstory is done, let's talk about this course.

LINUX 101 by Brent Eskridge from TCM Security | My Course

LINUX 101 by Brent Eskridge from TCM Security is a great introductory course for those who are just starting in the Linux / IT field. It shows the vast capability of Linux in this field. The way Mr. Brent taught us was so good. The contents were so good that anyone could learn it with full understanding and interest. The courses started with playing around with command lines, shell explanations, and the use of more/less commands to read the contents of a file. Next, basic directory/file system hierarchy and management were taught followed by users and group management. These are similar to the basics everyone would learn when they started out using Windows or MACOS. Later, software and package installation, shell commands, and utilities were taught, and some basic network analysis and text manipulation with redirection were mentioned. The use of Nano, Vim, and Gvim was also explained by Mr. Brent. If you ask me, I prefer Gedit and Nano over Vim, actually, hehe. In the end, some important and more complex lessons were included, such as Process Management, Regular Expressions, and Bash scripting. I am going to play with Linux on a platform called, Over The Wire and Explain The Shell.

Anyone who wishes to learn Linux from basics, with a proper mentor and examples should consider this course as not only this course is affordable, but also VERY useful and easy to understand. Let me know in the comments if you are going to take this course or your experience if you have taken this course. The next on my list is to learn OpenSSL before studying for CCNA. For that, I’m gonna use Learn OpenSSL with a real-world cheat sheet by, Ed Harmoush & David Bombal on Udemy. I will try to make a blog on this course, Kali Linux from FreeCodeCamps and Over The Wire platform when I finish them.

For now, It’s time for me to sign off 😉.
Till then, Peace Out! ✌🏼
